Over 70 Wisconsin organizations join National Voter Registration Day efforts to lift community voices

WISCONSIN – The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin (LWVWI) and more than 70 Wisconsin organizations are joining efforts on National Voter Registration Day, Tuesday, Sept. 28, to register voters and work with communities. Participating groups will be involved in voter registration events, phone banking, passing out voter information literature, sharing digital information to their networks, and more.

Voters of all backgrounds and ethnicities showed up in record numbers to vote in the Nov. 2020 election. Now, that momentum continues as communities rise up to register to vote and exercise their freedoms for fair representation.

“The first step to participating in our democracy is registering to vote, and we want this process to be both exciting and accessible for eligible voters,” said Eileen Newcomer, LWVWI voter education manager. “We are proud to be a part of this celebration of voting and plan to continue this energy through the 2022 elections.”

Since the Wisconsin Elections Commission recently deactivated more than 200,000 registrations of voters who haven’t voted in four years or who may have moved, the League encourages all voters to ensure that they’re registered at their current address by checking their registration status at myvote.wi.gov. This is especially important if you moved recently, haven’t voted in a while, haven’t voted since your voting rights have been restored since completing a felony sentence, or if you’re a first time voter.

The LWVWI is working in collaboration with the Wisconsin Voting Rights Coalition to mobilize communities around the state and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard. The League invites the public to join us in celebrating National Voter Registration Day by checking their registration status, attending a registration event, and asking their friends and family if they are registered and ready to vote.
