No. 21/22 #MUBB Earns 82-52 Win Over Providence Tuesday Night
Golden Eagles hit a season-high 17 3-pointers
MILWAUKEE – The No. 21/22 Marquette University men’s basketball team continued BIG EAST play Tuesday night with an 82-52 win over Providence at Fiserv Forum.
The Golden Eagles (21-7, 12-5 BIG EAST) were led by Ben Gold, who had a career-high 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting with six rebounds. Kam Jones had 17 points, seven assists and hit four 3-pointers for his 44th straight game scoring in double-figures, the longest active streak in the nation.
The first half saw seven lead changes and one tie. Providence hit a pair of 3-pointers to open play before a 12-5 MU run over the next three minutes gave MU its first lead,12-11, on a Tre Norman triple.
Marquette hit 12 3-pointers in the first half and led by 11 at the break, 43-32. Three Golden Eagles hit two 3-pointers while Kam Jones was 3-of-6 from deep in the first 20 minutes.
Marquette led by as many as 31 in the second half and led for 34 minutes of game action.
NOTABLE:
- Marquette improved to 26-15 all-time against Providence and 16-3 against the Friars in Milwaukee. MU won the previous meeting this season, 78-50, in Providence on New Year’s Eve.
- Third 30-plus point win over Providence in program history. MU won 93-63 over PC on Jan. 17, 2010 and 88-56 on Jan. 4, 2022.
- Marquette’s 12 made 3-point field goals in the first half are the squad’s most in any half this season.
- It is the highest single-half Marquette 3-point total since MU hit 12 in the second half of a 103-85 win over then-No. 14/15 Buffalo on Dec. 21, 2018. Former MU All-American Markus Howard had a game-high 45 points in that game and hit eight of his nine 3-pointers after the break.
- MU attempted a program-record 41 3-pointers on Tuesday, breaking the previous record of 40 recorded on Nov. 30 of this season against Western Carolina.
- MU set a season-high with 17 3-point makes, bettering the previous record of 14 hit in the overtime win at DePaul on Jan. 14.
- MU was one 3-point make shy of a program record of 18 hit three times previously, the most recent of which was in the 2018 win over Buffalo.
