Golden Eagles conclude regular season Saturday vs. St. John's
The No. 20/20 Marquette University men’s basketball team (22-8, 13-6 BIG EAST) wrapped up the road portion of the regular season with a 72-66 loss at UConn (21-9, 13-6 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night from Gampel Pavilion.
The two teams went back-and-forth for a majority of the second half, until UConn used a 10-0 run to pull ahead by as many as seven points. Marquette responded, however, and a layup by Jones closed the gap to 63-60 with 4:22 left. The Golden Eagles trailed by one point in the final minute, but a deep UConn trey as the shot clock was expiring proved to be the difference.
Marquette led 37-33 at the intermission after shooting 51.7 percent from the floor in the first half. Joplin led all scorers with 14 points and Kam Jones capped the half with a pair of free throws go get him to double figures.
Notables:
- Guard Kam Jones finished with 21 points, extending his double-digit scoring streak to 46 games, tying Villanova’s Eric Dixon for the longest active run in the country
- Marquette remains one of just two teams (St. Mary’s) to feature the same starting lineup all season
- The Golden Eagles made just their fourth visit to Gampel Pavilion Wednesday night and first since the 2020-21 campaign
- Marquette forward Ben Gold was limited due to foul trouble in the second half
UP NEXT:
Marquette returns to action on Saturday, March 8 at 11 a.m. CT when the team hosts St. John’s at Fiserv Forum on Senior Day/Al’s Day.
