Nia Imani Family, Inc. Hires Denise Gray as Executive Director
Nia Imani Family, Inc., Milwaukee’s only long-term transitional living and life skills program for young mothers and their children, announced the hiring of Denise Gray as its new executive director.
Gray, a Lexington, Kentucky, native, is recognized for her leadership in advancing equity, opportunity and systemic change for underserved communities. She made history as the first Black woman outside of Louisville to run for the Kentucky State Senate. She later served two terms on the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, representing the 6th District, the community where she was born and raised. In that role, she led policy efforts to address housing stability, youth empowerment, sexual assault awareness and community revitalization, building coalitions across political and cultural lines.
“Nia Imani Family is more than a transitional housing program. It’s a place of healing, hope and transformation,” Gray said. “My life’s work has been about creating pathways for people to thrive, and I am honored to bring that same commitment here to Milwaukee. This role is a sacred responsibility to both preserve the legacy of this organization founded by Dr. Belinda Pittman over 30 years ago and boldly shape its future.”
Gray has been celebrated for her ability to unite stakeholders, amplify marginalized voices and deliver results. Her leadership in Kentucky included advancing trauma-informed policy, securing resources for community development and creating partnerships between government, nonprofits and grassroots organizations.
At Nia Imani Family, Gray will lead efforts to strengthen its programming for the young women and their children, expand funding and deepen the organization’s impact for young mothers ages 18 to 25 and their children under age 5. Her vision includes enhancing life skills training, supporting mental health and early childhood education, and forging workforce development opportunities to ensure every resident leaves with the tools and confidence to live independently.
“Denise brings a rare blend of political acumen, compassion and organizational vision that will take Nia Imani Family to new heights,” said Shannon Lopez board chair of Nia Imani Family, Inc. “Her track record proves she knows how to navigate complex challenges and inspire real change. We are thrilled to welcome her leadership.”
Gray’s hiring marks a new chapter for Nia Imani Family, which has served Milwaukee families for more than 30 years. Under her leadership, the organization will continue its mission to provide housing, holistic care and pathways to self-sufficiency for young mothers rebuilding their lives.
