MADISON— Today, Menominee Tribe member and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs Ada Deer endorsed Mandela Barnes for the United States Senate.

“As lieutenant governor, I’ve been proud to ally with our tribal communities as we worked together to lead the response to COVID-19, create economic opportunity, and tackle climate change. I will not stop that work in the United States Senate and that’s why I’m so thrilled to have Ada Deer standing with me in this campaign,” said Mandela Barnes. “Ada has spent her career breaking down barriers and being a powerful voice for Tribal nations who for too long have been left out and left behind. With her standing at my side, I know we can take one more step toward equal opportunity for all by beating Ron Johnson and taking our vision for change to the United States Senate.”

“I’m so proud of the work Mandela has done to create opportunity for people all across Wisconsin,” said former Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Ada Deer. “I know we can always count on him to stand up to powerful special interests, and stand up for us. Whether it’s creating good jobs, ensuring affordable health care, or finding real solutions to the climate crisis, Mandela Barnes will deliver for Wisconsin. I’m proud to call him my friend, and proud to endorse him for the United States Senate.”

Ada Deer was appointed as the first woman to lead the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs and also served as a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee. Her endorsement comes as Mandela Barnes continues to build a diverse, statewide coalition to beat Ron Johnson in the opening weeks of his campaign. She joins Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi, over a dozen state legislators, mayors from across Wisconsin, Collective PAC, Democracy for America, MoveOn, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, and the Working Families Party in her endorsement of Barnes.
