Kam Jones moves into second all-time in scoring at MU
The No. 25/23 Marquette University men’s basketball team (22-9, 13-7 BIG EAST) opened play at the 2025 BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep with a 89-87 victory vs. Xavier (21-10, 13-7 BIG EAST) on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals at Madison Square Garden.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 14 points in the opening minutes of the second half, before using a 10-0 run to take a 63-62 lead midway through the period and the game would remain tight the rest of the way. Jones’ layup with 1:16 left gave MU an 81-80 advantage and Joplin followed up with a 3-pointer for an 84-80 lead. The Musketeers were forced to foul down the stretch but for the Golden Eagles Ben Gold, Stevie Mitchell, and Chase Ross were all able to connect at the line to secure the win.
Marquette trailed 46-36 at the intermission after shooting just 37.1 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of action. Jones, Joplin and Gold were all limited due to foul trouble and the MU defense allowed Xavier to shoot 55.2 percent from the floor.
