#MUBB Hosts Georgetown Tuesday Night

The No. Marquette University men’s basketball team (13-2, 4-0 BIG EAST) wraps up a two-game homestand when the squad hosts Georgetown (12-2, 3-0 BIG EAST) at Fiserv Forum on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. CT.  CBS Sports Network features the national television broadcast, with John Sadak (play-by-play) and Steve Lappas (analyst) calling the action. Following Tuesday’s outing, the Golden Eagles will have a week to prepare for the team’s Tuesday, Jan. 14 matchup at DePaul, but MU is currently in a stretch of the schedule that has the team at home in 4-of-6 outings.

Marquette Owns Edge In All-Time Series

Marquette owns a 23-14 advantage in the all-time series, with the Golden Eagles claiming wins in 13 of the last 16 outings and each of the last six.

All but two of the series matchups have come since Marquette joined the BIG EAST in 2005-06.

The programs first met during the 1941-42 campaign and the Hoyas were able to claim a 35-34 victory.  The next meeting didn’t come until the 1971-72 season and Marquette posted an 88-44 winning decision.

Marquette pulled away for a 91-57 win on the road on Feb. 3, 2024 in the most recent matchup.  Guard Kam Jones led four players in double figures with 31 points and David Joplin chipped in 15 points and four assists.

MU Continues Rare BIG EAST Start   

Marquette, which is competing in its 20th BIG EAST campaign in 2024-25, has now started league play 4-0 on two occasions since joining in 2005-06 after Friday night’s win over Creighton.

The Golden Eagles opened the 2012-13 league campaign 4-0 en route to a 14-4 overall record and share of the regular season title (Georgetown and Louisville) and also began play 9-0 in 2008-09 (finished 12-6).

Marquette has claimed five-straight victories in BIG EAST play on at least one occasion in each of the last three seasons.

Continuity Is Key To Recent Success

Since the 2022-23 campaign, Marquette is the only power conference team that hasn’t signed a NCAA Division I transfer, leading to as consistent a starting lineup as any program in the country.

Through games of Jan. 5, Marquette is one of just 19 (355 total) squads to feature the same starting lineup (K. Jones, Mitchell, Joplin, Ross, Gold).  Two years ago, Marquette and Marshall were the only two teams in the country to utilize the same starting five the entire season.

Since the opening contest of the 2022-23 campaign (Kolek, Ighodaro, Prosper, Mitchell, Jones), just eight different players have started a game for MU, the lowest total in all of NCAA Division I.

Mitchell Stepping Up In League Play 

Senior guard Stevie Mitchell, a candidate for the league’s defensive player of the year award, has stepped up his production at both ends of the court with the start of BIG EAST action.

The league leader in steals per game (2.6) through outings of Jan. 5, Mitchell has increased his production across-the-board, reaching double figures in points in each of the team’s four league contests.  He is contributing 14.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game in BIG EAST action and defensively has been tasked with guarding the opposing team’s top perimeter scorer.

In the most recent win over Creighton, Mitchell finished with 18 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists in 30 minutes of action and set personal bests in field goal attempts (17) and 3-point field goal attempts (9).
