MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds ATV/UTV riders to focus on safety this Father’s Day weekend.
To date in 2026, there have been 18 ATV/UTV fatalities, many of which involved alcohol and speed as top contributing factors.
Last year in Wisconsin, only 16 of the 39 fatal ATV/UTV crash incidents that took the lives of 41 people did not involve alcohol. Two-hundred and fifty five ATV/UTV OWI citations were issued statewide in 2025 as well.
“Father’s Day weekend is an opportunity for families to spend quality time together and make lasting memories,” said Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, DNR off-highway vehicle administrator. “This is a perfect time to set an example of responsible operation for children, peers and fellow riders while creating those memories.”
Follow these safety tips:
- Always ride sober, with zero alcohol or substances.
- Wear helmets and seatbelts, even when loading and unloading machines.
- Follow all speed limits and slow down for curves and hills.
- Take a safety class regardless of age requirements.
“A simple thing like wearing a helmet in front of your children will have lasting effects on them duplicating that same behavior,” said Holsclaw. “Help set up future riders for safety and success by using all safety equipment every time you ride. If you wear it, they will too.”
