MSOC Holds Off UIC 5-4 In Thrilling Win
Pendleton, Horgoien each score twice, Simpson stops to PKs
The Marquette University men’s soccer team (5-3-2, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) continued the non-conference portion of its 2025 campaign with a 5-4 victory vs. UIC (7-1-3, 0-0-2 MVC) on Tuesday night at Valley Fields.
Midfielder Nico Pendleton and forward Mad Konrad Horgoien each netted a pair of goals and netminder Cameron Simpson stopped a pair of penalty kick attempts in the win.
Marquette opened the scoring at the 10:56 mark when Nico Pendleton converted on a penalty kick following a handball in the box off a Marquette service. MU netminder saved a UIC PK later in the half to keep the Flames off the board, but UIC eventually found the back of the net at the 31:53 mark, tapping home a loose ball from six yards out.
The Golden Eagles moved ahead 3-1 on Pendleton’s second of the match at the 58:30 mark, but UIC responded with a pair of scores in just over three minutes to level the score, 3-3, with just over 20 minute left.
Marquette again surged ahead on Horgoien’s third of the campaign at the 68:35 mark, but it was his second tally that proved to be the game winner after finishing a perfectly-placed through ball by Mateo Stoka with just over 15 minutes on the clock.
Along with Simpson’s pair of penalty kick saves, UIC also had another goal called back for offsides.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to BIG EAST action at Butler on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. CT.
