MPS Releases Superintendent’s Proposed Budget for 2023-24; Focus Remains on Students and Classrooms
Milwaukee – On Friday, April 28, 2023, Milwaukee Public Schools released the proposed budget for the 2023–24 school year. The nearly $1.5 billion balanced budget invests in students, staff, and schools while enhancing academic outcomes. For every dollar budgeted in the MPS School Operations Fund, 94 percent is used to educate and support children in Milwaukee.
The 2023–24 Superintendent’s Proposed Budget does reflect an overall decrease of $372.1 million, or a 19.9 percent decrease, from the 2022–23 Amended Adopted Budget. This change is mainly due to a decrease in the Categorical Fund caused by the expending of the ESSER I, ESSER II, and ESSER III revenues.
The following significant budget changes are proposed for 2023–24.
- Increasing school funding by $19.1 million, showing the district’s commitment to the classroom.
- Restoring revenue to the Construction Fund to continue investments in facilities.
- Attracting and retaining staff through employee salary schedules and a proposed cost‐of‐living increase.
- Increasing access to music, art, and physical education in schools, thanks to the voter-approved 2020 referendum.
The public can view the proposed budget at mpsmke.com/budget. It will be presented to the Milwaukee Board of School Directors Committee on Strategic Planning and Budget on Thursday, May 4, at 5:30 p.m.
Members of the public can comment on the document at the meeting, which will take place in the Central Services Auditorium, 5225 W. Vliet St., Milwaukee. Instructions for public testimony can be found at https://mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/en/District/About-MPS/School-Board/Boardcast.htm
