Milwaukee Public Schools will kick off enrollment for Fall 2023 with a Kindergarten Fair at North Division High School (1011 W Center St, Milwaukee) Saturday, February 4, 2023. All families who want to secure their child’s seat for the upcoming school year are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible. The first 100 families to enroll at the fair will receive a child’s backpack filled with supplies and a t-shirt.

“MPS offers a range of unique educational options not available anywhere else in the state. Many of our specialized schools, like those that offer Montessori or language programs, fill up quickly,” said Matthew Boswell, Senior Director of Student Services. “More than 100 schools representing dozens of unique programs will have staff available to answer questions and assist with enrollment.”

Families are invited to submit their top three school choices to ensure they are accepted to a school that meets their needs.

Kindergarten Enrollment Fair

More than 100 schools that offer Head Start and kindergarten will be represented at the February 4 Kindergarten Fair. Families can speak directly with school staff and learn about offerings including Montessori schools, bilingual schools, special education, language immersion programs, fine arts programs, and before- and after-school care options.

Interpreters will be available for families who require American Sign Language, Arabic, Burmese, Hmong, Karen, Rohingya, Somali, or Spanish.

MPS Kindergarten Enrollment Period

Milwaukee families with children who will turn 3, 4, or 5 years old by September 1 are invited to enroll their child during the MPS kindergarten enrollment period from February 4 to March 5. Wisconsin law requires children to complete five-year-old kindergarten before entering first grade.

  • The kindergarten enrollment period: Each year, MPS opens Kindergarten Enrollment in early February. Kindergarten Enrollment remains open for several weeks. Children who are enrolled during this period have a better chance of being placed in their first-choice school.
  • After the kindergarten enrollment window deadline: Enrollment will remain closed while school assignments are being made. Kindergarten enrollment will reopen from April 10 through August 1, 2023. If you miss the kindergarten enrollment window, you will be able to enroll your child, but some schools may be filled. The remaining seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  •  All other grade levels: The 2023 High School Enrollment period for first-choice schools occurred in October 2022. All other grade levels, including high school, can enroll for Fall 2023 from February 4 to August 1, 2023. Many high school seats are filled, so enroll soon!

How to Enroll

Families have several options to enroll:

In-Person:

  •  Families who attend the February 4 Kindergarten Fair can get assistance to enroll on-site.
  •  Families may be able to enroll at an MPS school. This does not improve your chances of getting into your first-choice school. Contact a school for details.

By Phone: Families may call the District Enrollment Office in the Department of Student Services for questions about enrolling a child in MPS at (414) 475-8159.
