MPS Hosts Second Great Schools Committee Meeting Monday
Group to discuss criteria for closing or merging schools, candidates for closure or merger
(MILWAUKEE) — Milwaukee Public Schools will host the second meeting of the Great Schools Committee Monday.
The meeting, which will take place at Starms Discovery Learning Center (2035 N. 25th Street), runs from 6-8 p.m. and is open to the public.
At this second committee meeting, members are scheduled to discuss and approve criteria for closing or merging schools, as well as discuss candidates for closure or merger. Previous consultant recommendations regarding the schools or number of schools to be considered are one part of the discussion but are not final, and no other final decisions have been made.
The group also has two meetings scheduled for October, where members will discuss recommendations on facility investments, academic program investments, policy considerations, and funding scenarios.
The committee, one of two announced earlier this month to shape the future of the district, has been asked to present recommendations for school closures and mergers for board action in November. Updates to the District’s Long Range Facility Master Plan would be presented to the board in December.
The committee was formed to reflect MPS’s commitment to meaningful community involvement and ensuring that students, families, employees, and community members have opportunities to help inform decisions that affect schools across Milwaukee.
It includes students, parents, community representatives, principals, and administrators, Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association representatives, and Milwaukee Board of School Directors members. It serves in an advisory capacity, with final decisions remaining the responsibility of the Superintendent and Milwaukee Board of School Directors.
