Following her recent passing, Representative Gwen Moore has introduced a bipartisan bill to rename the existing Women’s Well Clinic at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee as the Anna Mae Robertson VA Well Women Clinic. This legislation received bipartisan support in the Wisconsin delegation, including Representatives Mark Pocan (WI-02), Bryan Steil (WI-01), Fitzgerald (WI-05), and Tony Wied (WI-08).

“This legislation honors the memory and service of Mrs. Anna Mae Robertson, who served our country honorably and called Milwaukee her home for decades. Through this effort, even more people will learn about her legacy and the incredible story of the Six Triple Eight,” said Representative Gwen Moore (WI-04).

“As our community and her family mourn her passing, I am pleased that my Wisconsin colleagues from both sides of the aisle have come together to help honor her in this way.”

“Anna Mae Robertson lived a life of service to her nation and community,” said Rep. Bryan Steil (WI-01). “It’s fitting that she receives recognition for her service to our nation and her fellow veterans at the facility she dedicated her time and talents.”

“Mrs. Anna Mae Robertson served our country admirably,” said Representative Mark Pocan (WI-02). “A Milwaukee native through and through, I’m honored to join Congresswoman Moore on this bill to rename this Women’s Well Clinic in her name.”

“Anna Mae Robertson bravely served our country during World War II and exemplifies the best of Wisconsin. It is very fitting that we honor her legacy by renaming the Milwaukee VA Medical Center after her, so that her story lives on for many years to come. I am proud to stand alongside my colleagues from Wisconsin in recognizing Mrs. Robertson’s dedicated service to our nation,” said Rep. Tony Wied (WI-08).

Background
Mrs. Anna Mae Robertson, who passed away at the age of 101 on May 30, served in the Six Triple Eight Central Postal Directory Battalion, which was the only all-Black Women Army Corps (WAC) battalion to serve overseas during World War II. They were given a mission to sort a huge backlog of mail and letters in six months, and shattered expectations, closing the backlog in only months. However, after their service, there was little to no recognition of their work to boost morale and connect service members with their loved ones during World War II.

After the war, Mrs. Robertson moved to Milwaukee where she worked, including at the then Wood Veterans Hospital, married and raised eight children. In April 2025, members of the Six Triple Eight were officially awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, spurred from legislation Congresswoman Moore and Senator Jerry Moran had spearheaded into law in 2022.
