MLAX Claims BIG EAST Opener, 13-8, over St. John’s
MU is off to its best nine-game start since 2017
MILWAUKEE – Carsen Brandt and Bobby O’Grady each scored four goals for the Marquette University men’s lacrosse team in a 13-8 victory over St. John’s on Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles (6-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) won their league lid-lifter for the first time since 2022 and are off to their best nine-game start to a season since 2017.
MU led 8-5 after 30 minutes following O’Grady’s second of the day right before the half. Both of O’Grady’s first half scores came in the final 4:29 of the second quarter. He ended the day with 18 shots and MU out-shot the Red Storm, 50-37.
St. John’s (4-7, 0-1 BIG EAST) was led by four points from Bobby Seel, who posted two goals and a pair of assists.
NOTABLE:
- MU has won its last four games. MU’s last four-game winning streak was from March 5-28, 2017 and included wins over Detroit Mercy, Robert Morris, Georgetown and Air Force.
- Marquette last started a season 6-3 through nine games in 2017. That year, MU finished 8-8 after winning the BIG EAST tournament and falling at No. 5 Notre Dame in the NCAA First Round.
- MU won a BIG EAST opener for the first time since a 16-11 win over Providence on April 2 2022.
- Marquette is 11-2 all-time against St. John’s in a series that began during MU’s first season of competition in 2013.
- Marquette goalie Lucas Lawas made eight of his nine saves in the second half, including five in the third quarter. Last week, he notched 15 saves and held Air Force scoreless for the final 19:12 in a one-goal victory.
- MU junior SSDM captain Peter Detwiler posted one of the best games of his college career on Saturday. He scored his first goal of the year in the first quarter and posted career highs of five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
- In four career games against the Red Storm, O’Grady has posted 19 goals and three assists for 22 points.
- Brandt entered the game with five career hat tricks but had never reached four goals in a single game. His six points on Saturday ties a career best recorded during his second career game on Feb. 9, 2024 against Lindenwood.
UP NEXT: MU welcomes No. 17/15 Georgetown next Saturday, April 5 before hitting the road for a pair of league contests at Providence and Villanova.
