MILWAUKEE – Dr. Lori Bergen, dean of Marquette University’s Diederich College of Communication, has been named to the Poynter National Advisory Board. The prestigious Poynter Institute for Media Studies is a global leader in journalism education and a strategy center that stands for excellence in journalism, media and 21st century public discourse. Poynter faculty teach seminars and workshops at the institute in St. Petersburg, Florida, and at conferences and organizational sites around the world.
“It is an incredible honor to work side-by-side with some of the most influential journalists in the world as we strive to be responsive to the expanding world of journalism and news media,” Bergen said.
Bergen was named 2014 Journalism and Mass Communication Administrator of the Year by the Scripps Howard Foundation. She is president-elect of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and will become president of the association in 2015.
As dean, Bergen has spearheaded innovative academic initiatives at Marquette that include the O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism and the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, projects focused on improving student learning through partnerships with professionals to create high impact journalism. She is co-author of Media Violence and Aggression: Science and Ideology, a book that details the impact of violence in the media on children.
Bergen was one of five new journalism leaders named to the Poynter National Advisory Board. Additional new members include:
- Arthur Gregg Sulzberger, senior editor for strategy at The New York Times. He was the chief author of the widely quoted Innovation Report earlier this year.
- Anders Gyllenhaal, vice president of news and Washington editor for The McClatchy Co. He has been the executive editor of the Miami Herald and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
- Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, managing editor/digital at The Washington Post. In that role, he’s the chief strategist for digital execution.
- Alexandra Zayas, an investigative reporter at the Tampa Bay Times. Alex has won the Seldon Ring Award for Investigative Reporting, the Livingston Award for Young Journalists and the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. She’s also been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
“Each of the board members have gained widespread recognition for their work and developed reputations as journalism innovators,” said Poynter President Tim Franklin in a news release accompanying the announcement.
The new members will each serve two-year terms on the 10-person board, which advises Poynter’s faculty and staff on trends shaping various media industries.
