As part of the Common Council meeting tomorrow – Tuesday, December 16, local 3rd graders from Golda Meir will participate in the Council meeting as the selected winners of the Alderperson for a Day essay contest. Created by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, and supported by the entire Common Council, Alderperson for a Day tasked students with learning about local government and writing a short essay about the change they would enact within the community if they were an Alderperson for a day.

“Young people represent a sometimes overlooked constituency within the city, but engaging youth in local government and hearing their thoughts and ideas about ways we can improve the comm

unity is important,” said Alderwoman Coggs. “This program is designed to give these young people an outlet to share their thoughts directly with elected officials, while also learning from them and experiencing the legislative process in action. We want to support our future leaders, and are thrilled to have them join tomorrow’s Council meeting.”

In addition to joining the Common Council meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16, the contest winners will also participate in a talkback with Council members to discuss ways in which they would like to see the community improved. The group discussion will occur after the conclusion of the Common Council meeting.
