Latino Arts Celebrates the Dance of Life to Close Spring Season
World music and Latin jazz from explosive guitarist Juancho Herrera and Martin Soto’s tribute to cultural nostalgia and transformations
MILWAUKEE – February 18, 2014 – Latino Arts is proud to close the spring season with a one-two of stunning performing and visual arts from world music and Latin Jazz dynamo Juancho Herrera and Boricua Fame & Bomba Negra, a new collection from Chicago-based painter Martin Soto that explores Puerto Rican dance culture and personal evolution. The fun starts on Friday, March 7 with the opening reception of Boricua Fame & Bomba Negra at 5:00 p.m. in the Latino Arts Gallery before Juancho Herrera takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. in the Latino Arts Auditorium.
With more than twenty years of experience playing music for crowds over several continents, guitarist, vocalist, and composer Juancho Herrera has established himself as one of the most exciting names in Latin Jazz. Currently based in New York City, Herrera’s versatility and virtuosity as a guitarist have taken him around the world, from his roots in Colombia and Venezuela to playing with a diverse array of jazz and world music all-stars including Lila Downs, Alejandro Sanz, Branford Marsalis, Mercedes Sosa, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and The Chieftains. Herrera takes the stage in the Latino Arts Auditorium for two student matinee performances on Thursday, March 6 at 10:30 a.m. and Friday, March 7 at 10:30 a.m. and in his evening showcase on Friday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available through an exclusive collaboration with MiVoz.com at: http://juanchoherrera.mivoz.com
Tickets for evening performances in the Latino Arts Auditorium: General Admission $15, Seniors (60+) and Full-Time Students $10, $8 per student in groups of 10 or more. Dinner & A Show includes a General Admission ticket to the performance and the Friday fish buffet in Café el Sol (beverages and gratuity not included) for $25. Ticket prices for student matinee performances in the Latino Arts Auditorium: $12 Adults & Seniors, $8 Students & Kids (3 Years and Older).
Painter Martin Soto’s work celebrates the dance of life—transformations, the rhythm of our beating hearts and breaths, and the all-embracing energy of cosmic cycles of inspiration. His pieces touch on the presence of African aesthetics in contemporary western art and speak to the vibrancy of Puerto Rican culture. In his glowing review of Soto’s Boricua Fame & Bomba Negra collection, artist and curator Edward Maldonado notes that these new pieces “have taken a more personal and introspective direction,” citing that “the works utilize fluidity of paint and immediacy of drawing to gesture the flow of waters, volcanic eruptions, and lava flows – movements directed from the inner to the outer, as if natural ruptures are now evidence of the artist’s current psychic state.” Boricua Fame & Bomba Negra will be on display in the Latino Arts Gallery February 28 through June 6 with an opening reception on Friday, March 7 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Exhibitions in the Latino Arts Gallery are open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a suggested donation of $1.
