MILWAUKEE, Wis. (October 22, 2021) – Latino Arts, Inc., a premier provider of community Hispanic arts programming, will celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), by showcasing the Día de los Muertos Ofrendas exhibition and hosting a live performance by Los Angeles-based Chicano band, Las Cafeteras.

In the Latino Arts Gallery, the Día de los Muertos Ofrendas exhibition will feature the work of community members, students, artists and the Mexican Consulate. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is a day to celebrate, remember, and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. In Mexican culture, loved ones will make altars and place ofrendas (offerings) on the altar. This year, the Día de los Muertos Ofrendas exhibition, has both traditional and nontraditional ofrendas, showcasing the diversity in how the local community interprets the holiday.

Patrons of the exhibition can expect to see “The Fabric of Time” by fifth grade students from the University School of Milwaukee, “Healing a Mother’s Shattered Heart” by Maggie Kuhn, “In Memory of the Victims of Gun Violence” by Debra Gillispie, “Celebrar la Muerte es Vivir” by Barbara and Valeria Cerda, among others.

The Día de los Muertos Ofrendas exhibition is open now until November 12, with the opening reception taking place on Friday, October 29 at 5pm CT. Open gallery hours are Monday – Friday, from 10:30am to 7:30pm CT.

Following the opening reception, Las Cafeteras will take the stage in the Latino Arts Auditorium (located within the United Community Center) at 7pm CT with an opening performance by the Latino Arts String Program. Las Cafeteras blend a wide range of genres to create a uniquely vibrant and diverse sound. Using Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sing in English, Spanish and Spanglish, remixing sounds from rock to hip-hop to rancheras. The Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms, and rhymes deliver inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice. Their electric sound & energy has taken them around the world playing shows from the Bonnaroo to the Hollywood Bowl, WOMAD New Zealand to Montreal Jazz, & beyond!

Tickets for the show are $20 for general admission in advance ($25 at the door), $15 for seniors 60 and over and full-time students in advance ($20 at the door), and $8 per student in groups of 10 or more.
