Judges Rally Behind Danielle Shelton in Race for Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge

MILWAUKEE—More than 20 current and former circuit and municipal judges endorsed Danielle Shelton for Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge in Branch 40 today, highlighting the broad support she has earned since entering the race. Shelton, a U.S. Army veteran, announced her campaign this summer and currently works as an assistant state public defender. She would be only the third African-American woman to serve as a Circuit Court judge in Wisconsin’s history.

“I’m confident Danielle will be an excellent, fair, and wise judge,” said the Honorable Paul Rifelj, who served as a Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge. “Danielle’s character and values set her apart. As a public defender, Danielle has worked tirelessly to make sure her clients receive justice. Her compassion, experience, and leadership are unmatched.”

“Danielle Shelton is the kind of leader we need on the bench,” said Judge Mark Sanders, Milwaukee County Circuit Court. “As someone who came from the District Attorney’s office, I trust Danielle to be a fair and trusted judge who will treat every litigant fairly and manage her courtroom well. She has my full support.”

Danielle Shelton grew up primarily on the North side of Milwaukee, attended public schools, earned a bachelor’s degree from UW-Milwaukee, and received her law degree from Marquette University Law School. Danielle also served in the U.S. Army for six years, first as an enlisted PFC, and then becoming a commissioned officer through ROTC. After college, Danielle earned her Series 7 and 63 licenses and worked in the financial industry for many years. During law school at Marquette University, she worked in the Mediation Clinic with former Supreme Court Justice Janine Geske. Danielle has worked to help immigrants become situated in new communities, as a Senior Law civil attorney for a nonprofit organization, and currently serves as an Assistant State Public Defender. Danielle continues to live in Shorewood, where her daughters attended public school.

The election for Branch 40 will be held April 2, 2019, with a primary election on February 19 if necessary.
