Jones Posts #MUBB’s Third Triple-Double In 76-58 Win Over No. 6 Purdue
Golden Eagles back in action vs Georgia Saturday
MILWAUKEE – The No. 15/14 Marquette University men’s basketball team defeated No. 6/6 Purdue, 76-58, on Tuesday night behind the third triple-double in program history from Kam Jones.
Jones had 17 points and has scored in double-figures in every game this season. The senior guard had career-highs in rebounds (13) and assists (10).
MU snapped Purdue’s 39-game non-conference winning streak, the fourth-longest such mark in NCAA Division I history. The Boilermakers’ last loss to an opponent out of Big Ten play came on Dec. 8, 2020 against Miami (Fla.).
Marquette led for 34 minutes and 43 seconds of game action and led by as many as 20 in the second half.
Purdue (4-1,0-0 Big Ten) was led by Trey Kaufman-Renn, who had 16 points and seven boards.
NOTABLES
- Marquette improves to 18-12 under Shaka Smart versus teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 and 4-5 against teams ranked in the top six, including 3-0 against the AP’s No. 6 team.
- Jones’ triple-double was the first for a MU player since Dwyane Wade posted 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assist in a 2003 Elite Eight win over No. 1 Kentucky.
- Jones moved into a tie on the MU career scoring list with Don Kojis for 17th with 1,504 points. Only 18 players have ever reached 1,500 point in a MU uniform.
- Jones reached the triple-double on his 10th assist, a Mitchell 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining. That basket pushed Mitchell to a new career best 21 points.
- Mitchell was a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe to mark a career high.
- Mitchell posted a season-high four steals, his third game this season with at least three.
- In addition to Purdue’s non-conference winning streak, MU also snapped its 25-straight wins in November.
- The win is Marquette’s second all-time against the Boilermakers and first since a 65-55 victory on Nov. 13, 2019 at Fiserv Forum. Koby McEwen and Markus Howard scored 23 and 18 points, respectively, for the Golden Eagles.
- MU entered the game fifth nationally in turnover margin (+9) and posted a plus-9 mark on Tuesday (15-to-6)
- Marquette had four players in double-figure scoring for the third time this season. MU junior Ben Gold had a season-best 11 points and hit 3-of-6 3-pointers.
- The Golden Eagles outscored the Boilermakers, 38-22, in the paint and had 19 fast-break points to Purdue’s four.
- Marquette had 18 points off of 15 Purdue turnovers.
- MU junior Chase Ross had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals, marking the third time in six games this season that he’s reached at least 11 points, five rebounds and five steals.
- Purdue’s Braden Smith (11 points) and Fletcher Loyer (13) combined for 24 points, their lowest cumulative mark of the season and their lowest in three career games against MU. They combined for 29 in the 2022 meeting in West Lafayette and 28 in last year’s game in the Maui Invitational.
- MU freshman Demarius Owens scored his first college bucket on a drive to the basket with 8:06 remaining in the first half. He also sank a free throw to complete a three-point play.
- Purdue shot .333 from 3-point range on Tuesday night after entering the game seventh nationally (.460).
