Milwaukee (April 22, 2026) — Islands of Brilliance (IOB), a Milwaukee-based nonprofit that teaches children and young adults on the autism spectrum creative skills, has been adding students as it settles into its permanent home. Last year, IOB experienced double digit growth – a trend that’s continued into 2026 – and moved to a new location.

The nonprofit’s flagship program, Foundation Workshops, grew by 49%, reflecting increased demand and the strength of IOB’s mentorship-based model. To date in 2026, IOB has maintained significant growth across all program areas including:

  • Doodle Lounge – an online forum for students to doodle, sketch and share their creativity
  • IOB@ – in-person workshops that travel to different MKE destinations, including the Milwaukee Art Museum, Zoo and Ballet
  • Foundation Workshops – one-on-one in-person or online mentorships
  • Digital Academy – online learning opportunities with IOB creative technologists
  • Brilliant Breakfast Club – online and in-person meetups every Friday for young adults 18+
  • Private 1:1 Sessions

“This moment reflects both the growing demand for our work and the incredible potential of the students we serve,” says Mark Fairbanks, co-founder and executive director of Islands of Brilliance. “As more families seek out spaces where their children feel seen, supported and inspired, we couldn’t be prouder of finally having a studio environment that matches the creativity, connection and sense of belonging that define the Islands of Brilliance experience.”

New Neurodivergent-friendly Studio

In June 2025, IOB moved into its very own 3,000-square-foot space in the Eagleknit Building at 507 S. 2nd St. in the Walker’s Point neighborhood.

The nonprofit worked with Andrew Lasca, a principal with HGA and parent whose son attends IOB classes, to design a space to meet its functional requirements, as well as the sensory needs of those on the autism spectrum.

Lasca and his team took everything into consideration and utilized a variety of materials to dampen sounds that can sometimes agitate those who are on the spectrum, including felt panels on the walls and ceilings, soft carpeting around the perimeter and breakout rooms, which provide moments of calm. No detail was too big or too small. Case in point, the HGA team worked with the mechanical contractor to locate the HVAC elements in an isolated area to minimize noise.

Last but not least, the HGA team incorporated the IOB brand with bright and lively colors that add personality and interest to the studio without being too distracting.

“I went into architecture with the belief that the built environment can positively impact people’s lives,” says Lasca. “Since my son and I are often at IOB, this is one of those chances where you can see the impact first-hand and how children and adults interact with the space and how it serves their needs. It’s a project that holds a special place in my heart.”

Susan Bay, another IOB parent, echoes her appreciation for the space.

“Islands of Brilliance has brought so much joy into our family’s life, and the new studio captures everything that makes this community special. When my sons walk in, they feel comfortable, welcomed and truly valued. As a parent, that means everything,” says Bay. “From quiet rooms and flexible workspaces to natural light and a place for parents to work nearby, every detail reflects a deep understanding of what families need. The dedicated studio doesn’t just support creativity; it builds community and confidence. Through Islands of Brilliance, my sons have discovered real skills and a sense of possibility that is shaping how they see themselves and what they believe is possible as they move toward college, work and a meaningful future.”
