URBANA, Illinois – Senior Patrick Adler fired a 3-under 68 to lead the Marquette University men’s golf team in the first round of the NCAA Urbana Regional on Monday at Atkins Golf Club. The Golden Eagles are tied for fifth with Long Beach State at 1-over par (285).

The BIG EAST Conference champion Golden Eagles made their sixth NCAA Regional appearance on Monday and Adler’s first round 68 tied Brandon Cloete (2015 second round) for the lowest single round regional score in program history. Cloete’s second round in 2015 was played at Sagamore Country Club in Noblesville, Indiana during MU’s second NCAA trip all-time.

Adler pushed the Golden Eagles up the leaderboard during the afternoon with four consecutive birdies on holes 12-15. Adler and fellow senior Max Lyons contributed huge up-and-downs on No. 18 to keep MU tied with Long Beach State at 1-over for the day after MU dropped a few spots coming into the clubhouse with five bogeys among counting scores on holes 16-18.

The Golden Eagles are two strokes behind fourth-place Troy and four behind UNLV. Marquette entered the day as the eighth-seeded team in the regional at No. 47 in the Scoreboard Division I Men’s College Golf Rankings, but finished the day one stroke ahead of Oklahoma State (No. 2) and seven strokes up on North Carolina (No. 10).

Freshman Vincent Cervantes posted Marquette’s second-best opening round with an even-par 71 that included three birdies in a four-hole stretch from 3-6. That included a holed-out pitch shot for birdie on the 530-yard par-4 fifth hole over a berm after a double bogey on the par-3 fourth. The native of Chandler, Arizona closed his first career regional round with 11 pars and a lone bogey over his final 12 holes.

The Golden Eagles are paired with Troy and Long Beach State in Tuesday’s second round and Mason Schmidtke leads the MU contingent off No. 10 at 8:33 a.m. Central time. Adler will be MU’s final player to tee off at 9:17 a.m.
