MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s golf team heads to the Boilermaker Invitational for the first time in program history on Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20 at Ackerman-Allen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Indiana.
THE EVENT
The Boilermaker Invitational is in its 20th season of competition and third at Ackerman-Allen. Tournament-host Purdue won the event in 2023 when it was last held.
The field is comprised of 18 teams including Purdue, Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Toledo, Illinois State, Indiana, Iowa, Northern Illinois, Marquette, Butler, Michigan, Michigan State, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, DePaul, Georgetown, Bowling Green State and Notre Dame.
Purdue also hosts the Boilermaker Individual this weekend at Kampen Golf Course, where MU competed at the fall. The Golden Eagles tied for six out of 15 teams at the event and were led by both Johan Widal and Max Lyons in a tie for 13th place at even par (216).
THE COURSE
The Ackerman-Allen Course, a Pete Dye design, is an 18-hole, parkland-style, par-72 championship golf course featuring large bent-grass greens, fairways and tees. The layout presents a challenge for golfers of all abilities with rolling hills, tree-lined fairways, white sand bunkers, and minimal water hazards. Ackerman-Allen offers five sets of tees with the championship tees this week playing at 7,275 yards. (PurdueGolf.com)

The Golden Eagles won their third event of the academic year in their last tournament at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, North Carolina on April 7-8. The Golden Eagles posted a 5-under 555 (284-271) through 36 holes in the Irish Creek Collegiate and were paced by medalist Vincent Cervantes, who carded a 4-under 136 for the event, including a collegiate-low 6-under 64 in the final round.
Seven of the 10 rounds Cervantes has played this spring have been at par-or-better, and the native of Chandler, Arizona is the first MU freshman to win an event since Hunter Eichhorn in 2018. He’s third among all Golden Eagles this season with 79 birdies through 25 rounds.
Max Lyons has finished under par at each of MU’s four events this spring season and has placed in the top three overall at each of Marquette’s last three events. Lyons leads the Golden Eagles with a 70.72 per round scoring average, which is -0.48 strokes to par. Those numbers rank third and fourth, respectively, for a single season in Marquette history. He has scored in the 60s during nine rounds this season and shot par-or-better in 15 of the 25 rounds in which he’s competed. Lyons boasts a team-best seven top-20 finishes and nine of the 10 rounds he’s played this spring have been under par.
Schmidtke played for the first time this season as part of MU’s lineup at Irish Creek and was third on the squad with a 4-over 144. He is the lone individual in MU’s lineup who has previously played at Ackerman-Allen while at Marquette. Schmidtke tied for sixth with a 2-over 215 at the course during the fall in the Purdue Fall Individual on Sept. 22-23.
Ryan Banas and Will Hemauer will each compete on Saturday and Sunday in the Boilermaker Invitational at the Kampen Course.
