RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Marquette University men’s golf team finished ninth following Wednesday’s final round of the Puerto Rico Classic at Grand Reserve Golf Club.

The Golden Eagles (285-284-280-849) shot a combined 8-under 280 on the day, but could not move up the team leaderboard with all but one squad shooting under par. MU finished five strokes ahead of Minnesota in 10th place and four behind eighth-place Tennessee, while tournament-host Purdue won the event with a 39-under 825 in a loaded tournament field.

The event included the nation’s No. 1 (Ole Miss) and 2 (Oklahoma) squads in the Scoreboard College Golf Rankings, plus No. 8 LSU, No. 9 Virginia, No. 17 South Carolina, No. 28 Tennessee, No. 32 Georgia, No. 37 Charleston. MU entered the event ranked No. 48 nationally and finished ahead of Minnesota, North Florida, No. 37 College of Charleson, Iowa, Ohio State and Wisconsin in the very competitive field to earn team points.

Boilermakers Sam Easterbrook (-15) and Kent Hsiao (-14) finished 1-2 in the event, and Johan Widal led MU in a tie for 11th place with an 8-under 208. Widal finished with an even-par 72 after consecutive 4-under 68s to open play. Widal’s score-to-par (-8) and total strokes (208) are season bests for the NCAA Division II transfer who is the reigning BIG EAST Conference Golfer of the Week.

Seniors Max Lyons and Patrick Adler recorded MU’s best final rounds with a 6-under 66 and 4-under-68, respectively. Lyons did not post anything over par on Wednesday and six of his nine birdies in the event came on the final day. Lyons posted a team-leading 41 pars for the week and his scoring average of 3.83 on par-4s ranked third in the entire field.

The round is Lyons’ lowest score since posting a 6-under 65 in the opening round of the Valspar Collegiate in 2023 and breaks his previous low of 67 in the Puerto Rico Classic recorded as a freshman in the spring of 2022.

Adler also had six birdies on Wednesday, but those were offset by bogeys on the par-4 fourth and seventh holes.
