Former U.S. ambassador to Republic of Korea to give keynote lecture at Marquette University

MILWAUKEE – Sung Kim, the U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Korea from 2011-2014, will be the keynote speaker at the John K.C. Oh Memorial Lecture Series on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Weasler Auditorium, 1506 W. Wisconsin Ave.
Kim’s speech is titled “The U.S.-Republic of Korea Alliance: Built to Last.” A reception will follow his speech.
From Nov. 3, 2011, until October 2014, Kim was the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. On Nov. 14, 2014, he began his term as special representative for North Korea policy and deputy assistant secretary for Korea and Japan. Previously, Kim was the special envoy for the Six-Party Talks with the rank of ambassador. He also headed the Office of Korean Affairs at the State Department from August 2006 to July 2008.
His Washington, D.C., assignments have included stints as a desk officer in the State Department’s Office of Chinese Affairs and staff assistant in the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs. He also has worked as a prosecutor in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
Kim was born in Seoul, Korea, and grew up in Los Angeles. He received an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, a law degree from Loyola University and a master of laws degree from the London School of Economics.

Donald Manzullo, the president of the Korea Economic Institute of America, will speak on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Raynor Memorial Libraries Beaumier Suite A. His lecture is titled “From Member of Congress to the President of KEI: Lessons about Capitol Hill and Research Institutes.” For 20 years, Manzullo represented the 16th District in Illinois. He has a law degree from Marquette.
- Troy Stangarone, the senior director of KEI, will speak on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Raynor Memorial Libraries Beaumier Suite BC. His speech is titled “The Winding Road to Unification: Challenges and Opportunities on the Korean Peninsula.”
The Dr. John K.C. Oh Lecture on Korean Affairs is named after a former faculty member in Marquette’s Department of Political Science. Oh also was chair of the department and dean of the Graduate School. The series was made possible by a gift from Bonnie Oh in memory of her husband.
