McFARLAND — State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly announced Monday that the Department of Public Instruction will be increasing special education reimbursement and restoring revenue limit indexing to inflation for the first time since 2009-10. More from Dr. Underly’s announcement can be found by clicking on this link.

In response to Monday’s announcement, Sen. Kelda Roys, who is a member of the Joint Committee on Finance and represents most of the City of Madison, all of Monona, and part of McFarland, issued the following statement:

“Once again, Dr. Underly is showing herself to be one of Wisconsin’s greatest champions for children by presenting her vision for a robust and necessary state investment in public schools. Our communities are best served when our actions and investments deliver on the top priority — our children.

“Dr. Underly personally understands that state support is crucial for local schools and taxpayers. That’s why she has put forth a responsible budget to benefit every Wisconsinite. Public schools are struggling under harsh state levy limits, forcing districts to repeatedly go to referenda to recruit and retain great teachers and to give every student a good education. Wisconsin is fortunate to have a determined advocate for public education in Dr. Underly.

“This is a budget proposal that finally puts our kids and our schools first, while helping take the burden off of local taxpayers. I encourage my colleagues to join me in supporting and passing it.”
