Democratic Members Statement on the Senate Special Committee on Oversight of the Department of Justice

MADISON, Wis. – Today, the Special Committee on Oversight of the Department of Justice convened to hear testimonies from three individuals and a representative from Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce.

Senator Jodi Habush Sinykin (D-Whitefish Bay) and Senator Melissa Ratcliff (D-Cottage Grove) released the following statement:

“It’s unfortunate that the Legislature is spending its time and resources on this political farce put on by Senate Republicans. Oversight is a critical responsibility of the Legislature, and it is important that we approach this work with seriousness, fairness, and a commitment to facts. However, after four hours of partisan and hyperbolic testimony, the reason for this Special Committee and the Senate Republicans’ speculation that led to its creation, has remained unwarranted and fruitless.

“The only invited speaker with credibility on this issue, Dr. Paul Nolette, the Director of Les Apsin Center for Government at Marquette University, made clear that the Wisconsin Department of Justice already had in place appropriate guardrails and oversight over the NYU fellows in question.

“We look forward to hearing from the Attorney General tomorrow.”
