Milwaukee (October 23rd, 2024) Danceworks is thrilled to present dis/connect as the opening work in the Danceworks Performance Company (DPMKE) concert season. dis/connect.  The concert will be held at Danceworks Studio Theater (1661 N Water Street in Milwaukee), with shows November 7th through 10th.

With gazes cast downward, we move through our day. Transfixed by the happenings online and immersed in the digital world, what possibilities drift by? How many opportunities to connect are simply missed? A world around us alive with color and texture seeks our attention…

Siblings and artists, Gina Laurenzi (Danceworks co-artistic director) and Dustin Laurenzi (Chicago musician and composer), amplify the Danceworks space creating a world of a wondrous nature.  Performers cross between two studio spaces, inciting playful happenings and curious incidents allowing  space for imagination to flourish through an experience of sound and color. dis/connect interrupts our dependence on technology revealing the wondrous positive effects of   reconnection with self, others, and the environment in real time.

Joining the Danceworks stage are musicians Dustin Laurenzi and Jeff Swanson who create structured improvisatory soundscapes, melding acoustic and synthesized instrumentation. Drawing equally from traditions of free improvised music as well as electronic and sample-based music, the duo seamlessly weave earthy and otherworldly sounds into intricate textures.

“dis/connect is my third full length concert set on DPMKE but my first as co-artistic director. Dustin and I have collaborated on many events over the years and it is always a thrill to combine our talents, and build a new performance world that is a blend of original music and dance. We are delighted to share this work with the community. dis/connect is a continuation of my research into wonder, worldbuilding, and immersive art, and hopes to inspire connection and evoke curiosity within us, and in the world around us.” – Gina Laurenzi

“Danceworks Performance MKE is the resident professional company of Danceworks, Inc., co-led by both Gina Laurenzi and myself. We are excited to collaborate not only with Gina’s brother Dustin Laurenzi and guest artist Jeff Swanson in dis/connect, but also further down the line with Milwaukee Opera Theatre for the revival of the Milwaukee crowd favorite, Rusalka. In the spring we will join forces with Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, Cuauhtli Ramírez Castro, and Peter Stathas in Fables from the Wide Sky.

This current season is packed with collaboration. Our resident groups—Danceworks Apprentice MKE, Youth Performance Company, and our Intergenerational Company—are featured in Fables from the Wide Sky. Longtime collaborator and composer Allen Russell joins our company to create ambiance and new work for the Danceworks Gala Concert in March. DPMKE remains committed to celebrating the vitality and diversity of Milwaukee’s arts community by creating thought-provoking work with curiosity, virtuosity, and physicality.” – Christal Wagner
