MILWAUKEE – Over 1,000 fifth and sixth grade students from 50 Milwaukee area schools will show off their ballroom dancing skills at the Danceworks Mad Hot Ballroom Competition on Saturday, May 19th, 2018! The public is invited to the BMO Harris Bradley Center (1001 N. 4th St. in Milwaukee) beginning at 9:30am to cheer on students as they compete in Salsa, Tango and Swing styles of ballroom dance as part of the Danceworks Mad Hot Ballroom & Tap Program. Finals and awards will begin at 12:30pm. The Danceworks Mad Hot Ballroom Competition is always free and open to the public, and guests are welcome to join throughout the day, or watch via live stream on DanceworksMKE.org.

Following January’s successful Mad Hot Tap Dance Competition, Danceworks continued the 12th year of Mad Hot with fifth and sixth graders at 50 Milwaukee area public and private schools in February. Students spend one hour, twice per week learning routines for each style of ballroom dance—22 hours total throughout the spring semester. The program’s primary goals are to improve students’ self-confidence, respect for self and others, and attitudes toward physical activity. “The MPS partnership with Danceworks that makes Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap possible is truly a game-changer for our students,” says Dr. Darienne Driver, Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools. “When I see the joy and pride in our students at the competition, I also see how deeply the Mad Hot program helps them grow personally, academically and socially.”

This year’s Mad Hot Ballroom Dance Competition will be Danceworks’ final competition at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. “By opening up their doors to Danceworks 12 years ago, Steve Costello and his BMO Harris Bradley Center team opened up the hearts and untapped the potential of more than 26,000 Milwaukee area students,” says Danceworks President & CEO, Deborah Wenzler Farris. “Danceworks celebrates the Bradley Center team for the final competition of our cherished partnership and looks forward to exciting changes for the 2018-19 Mad Hot program.”
