Council members introduce file to discuss Election Day ballot shortages

By - Apr 3rd, 2025 06:16 pm

Alderwoman Andrea M. Pratt has authored a Common Council communication file to have the executive director of the City of Milwaukee Election Commission address the paper ballot shortages that affected numerous city polling locations during Tuesday’s Spring General Election.

Council File # 241915 – ‘Communication relating to the April 1, 2025, General Election as well as the processes by which the necessary number of ballots is estimated, ballots are distributed, and possible shortages are reported and responded to’ – will be heard April 14 by the Judiciary and Legislation Committee at 9 a.m. in room 301-B at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St.

The file is co-sponsored by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr., and Alderwoman Sharlen P. Moore.

The Council members said their constituents need to know why there weren’t enough ballots for such a high profile election (state Supreme Court race and other key races).

“We look forward to finding out more about how this could have happened,” the Council members said, referring to the ballot shortages that left some voters waiting hours to vote.

“We knew about this election for several months and we knew it would be a high interest election, so why didn’t we have enough ballots?” they said.

The April 14 committee meeting will be broadcast live on the City Channel, available in the city on Spectrum cable channel 25 and on AT&T U-Verse (channel 99), and streamed live at www.city.milwaukee.gov/citychannel.
