Community Invited to Participate in Painting of New Cawker Park Mural
The park is soon to be renamed Al Jarreau Park in honor of the late great legendary musician born in Milwaukee.
Alderman Khalif Rainey is inviting the community to join local artist Tia Richardson in creating the new mural that is being installed at Cawker Park. The park is soon to be renamed Al Jarreau Park in honor of the late great legendary musician born in Milwaukee.
Artist Tia Richardson is utilizing ideas from residents (that were gathered at two listening sessions in June) along with the legacy of Jarreau’s music to draw inspiration for the design that will include a new fence mural and basketball court mural. Words and images for the fence mural are inspired from the Al Jarreau songs Mornin’, God’s Gift to the World, and Jacaranda Bougainvillea, as well as symbols/landmarks from the Amani community.
Community painting will take place TONIGHT – Friday, July 7 until 7 p.m. and tomorrow – Saturday, July 8 from 2 – 6 p.m. at 30th and Cawker. No art experience is required for volunteers.
“The input provided by area residents for these murals was greatly appreciated, and now the community is being asked once again to assist with this project. The more people we can have involved the better as we aim to complete this true community-driven project,” Alderman Rainey said.
The project is a City of Milwaukee Parks project in collaboration with Milwaukee County Parks, the Dominican Center, Amani United and Safe & Sound.
