City of Milwaukee Highlights the Vital Impact of Community Block Grants on Housing and Community Stability
Milwaukee, WI — The City of Milwaukee is proud celebrate Community Development Week which recognizes the critical role that Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding plays in strengthening neighborhoods, supporting vulnerable residents, and advancing housing stability across the city.
Over the past five years alone, CDBG funding has helped provide emergency housing for more than 8,600 Milwaukee residents and has made possible the rehabilitation of over 320 single-family homes and multi-family units—preserving affordable housing, revitalizing neighborhoods, and improving quality of life for families across Milwaukee.
As part of the City’s continued commitment to addressing housing needs, Mayor Cavalier Johnson is visiting several CDBG-supported sites this week. He will stop by:
- VIA CDC on Tuesday, April 22nd at 11:30 am at their construction site located at 1915 S 11th St.;
- Milwaukee Christian Center construction site, 1933 South 23rd St. on Thursday, April 24th at 10:15 am; and,
- Northcott Neighborhood House, 2460 N 6th St., on Thursday, April 24th at 3:00 pm;
These visits highlight the progress being made in the rehabilitation and construction of homes for low- to moderate-income individuals and families. The Mayor’s tour underscores Milwaukee’s dedication to sustainable and affordable growth.
These federal dollars support every corner of the city—making it possible for community-based organizations and local government to respond to housing emergencies, rehabilitate older housing, and keep neighborhoods vibrant. From Silver City to Sherman Park, these investments help ensure Milwaukeeans have the resources they need to thrive.
Northcott Neighborhood House Executive Director, Tony Kearney, shared: “At Northcott Neighborhood House, our employment and training initiatives support individuals who are low-income and/or reentering the community by helping them learn solid job skills that can lead to family-sustaining employment. All of our training programs combine classroom instruction with hands-on experience and are created with employer input. This job training is made possible through CDBG funding and is critical in helping individuals become contributing members of society. Individuals who learn necessary job skills and gain employment pay taxes which ultimately supports public services and strengthens our communities.”
As the City of Milwaukee continues to champion development and long-term community health, the continued allocation of this federal funding remains essential.
