Changing the narrative on a critical public health challenge
Suicide is a national public health issue that claims the lives of hundreds of thousands each year. So today on World Suicide Prevention Day, we can work to embrace the triennial theme of “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”. It is incumbent upon all of us to challenge harmful myths, reduce stigma, and foster open, compassionate conversations about suicide.
This year, World Suicide Prevention Day takes on a slightly more impactful meaning as we approach one year since my friend, and colleague, Jonathan Brostoff passed.
To that end, I was proud to stand with Diana Vang Brostoff, Jonathan Brostoff’s parents, several of my Common Council colleagues, as well as a variety of state, county, and city leaders for a program honoring Jonathan and the work of Rabbi Levi Stein who facilitated 41 suicide prevention trainings across Wisconsin in honor of the 41 years Jonathan graced us with his earthly presence.
I want to thank Rabbi Stein and the Friendship Circle of Wisconsin for their tremendous work in suicide prevention. In addition, I am grateful that the Common Council was able to invest in their crucial work through the Council Led Transformation Fund earlier this year.
I know I learned a lot from today’s QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper training, and I have no doubt this work can help save lives.
