Celebrating Manufacturing Month!
Statement of Alderwoman Chantia Lewis October 12, 2021
The state has declared October to be Manufacturing Month, and manufacturing has always been a part of Milwaukee’s rich heritage (‘Machine shop to the World!’) and industries have provided our city with countless opportunities throughout our history. In honor of this, I would like to recognize the major contributions these businesses and workers have had throughout our history and to this day. According to the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC) Foundation, during 2020 the state’s approximately 8,000 manufacturers employed nearly 475,000 people in Wisconsin. That means 1 in 6 Wisconsinites were employed by a manufacturing business.
My district—the New9thMKE—is blessed with a wide array of manufacturers who employ thousands of workers here and across the area, the state, the nation and the world. The commerce and employment opportunities they provide are absolutely vital to the economic health of Milwaukee and the region.
As much as $65 billion a year in economic output is tied to our manufacturing sector and to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) every year. October will certainly be a month for development and growth in our communities. I am excited and proud to be a part of this momentous movement and to promote such an important part of our society.
Manufacturing Month serves as a reminder that it is our workers and our businesses that keep our city alive and well.
