Brady Street Business Improvement District Partners with City of Milwaukee DPW on New Traffic Calming Measures

Milwaukee, WI — November 25, 2025 — The Brady Street Business Improvement District (BID #11) is partnering with the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works (DPW) to implement a series of traffic calming improvements along E. Brady Street between N. Cass Street and N. Warren Avenue. These coordinated efforts aim to reduce speeding, improve safety for people walking and driving, and enhance the overall experience for residents, visitors, and businesses throughout the Brady Street corridor. The work will roll out in two phases beginning this winter, with additional improvements planned for 2026.

Phase 1: Humboldt & Brady All-Red Flashing Signal Pilot

December 2025 – January 2026 (with potential extension)

DPW will launch a 30-day pilot at the intersection of E. Brady Street and N. Humboldt Boulevard, converting the current traffic signal to an all-red flashing mode—functioning as a four-way stop.

The goals of the pilot include:

  • Reducing the number of vehicles speeding as they approach the intersection
  • Decreasing red-light violations
  • Increasing comfort and safety for people crossing the street

During the pilot, DPW will evaluate key indicators such as yield compliance to pedestrians, peak-hour traffic congestion, and community feedback gathered through a public survey. The BID encourages all businesses and residents to participate in the survey to gather information regarding the pilot. Please follow the link: https://engage.milwaukee.gov/brady-traffic-calming

If the pilot performs successfully, the all-red flashing operation may continue for an additional 60 days.

Phase 2: Brady Street Traffic Calming

Fall 2026

The Brady Street BID and DPW are currently developing preliminary design concepts for additional traffic calming elements along E. Brady Street. Improvements under consideration include:

  • Raised crosswalks
  • Speed tables
  • Pinned-on bump-outs

These upgrades are intended to slow vehicle speeds and make crossings more accessible and comfortable for people walking. The Brady Street BID will work closely with DPW to review alternatives, gather community input, and finalize a preferred design. Construction is targeted for late 2026.

Importantly, these improvements are targeted enhancements and will not require full reconstruction of the street, minimizing disruption for businesses and visitors.

“Brady Street is one of Milwaukee’s most vibrant and walkable districts,” said Michael D. Sander, Executive Director of the Brady Street BID. “These safety improvements will help ensure that everyone—neighbors, customers, and employees—can enjoy the street comfortably and confidently.”
