Bill Schroeder Guest Bartending for Charity Oct. 25 at Central Standard Crafthouse & Kitchen
Central Standard Craft Distillery Co-Founders Evan Hughes and Pat McQuillan will welcome brew crew broadcaster and former major league catcher Bill Schroeder as a guest bartender for charity from 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the Central Standard Crafthouse & Kitchen, 320 E. Clybourn St. in downtown Milwaukee.
During the “Cocktails for a Cause” happy hour, Schroeder, the director of the crew’s annual fantasy baseball camp in Phoenix, Ariz., will mix up cocktails to benefit the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, a designated Milwaukee Landmark honoring veterans through the principles of art and peace.
“We can’t wait for Bill to get behind the bar and share stories from his playing days and time spent in the broadcast booth,” Hughes said. “It’s going to be a great night supporting a great local cause.”
For the event, Schroeder will team with Central Standard mixologists to create a signature cocktail and all tips and $5 from every one of Bill’s signature drinks served during the happy hour on the 25th will go directly to the War Memorial Center and specifically the nonprofit’s efforts to help veterans overcome the symptoms of PTSD and other anxiety disorders, by connecting veterans with service dog providers, trainers and other mental health resources.
Comedian Charlie Berens was the first to appear behind the Crafthouse & Kitchen bar as a “Cocktails-for-a-Cause” guest bartender. To celebrate September as Brandy Old Fashioned Month, Berens served his twist on the Brandy Old Fashioned, mixing cocktails with a buck knife to benefit the Near West Side Partners (NWSP).
“We are honored to have Bill and Charlie as our first guest bartenders for charity. What a one-two punch,” McQuillan said. “We’re also looking for others to take a spin behind our Crafthouse & Kitchen bar to spotlight and support their favorite nonprofits.”
The Midwest’s First Urban Distillery & Restaurant
In August 2019, Hughes and McQuillan opened the Crafthouse & Kitchen, the Midwest’s first new urban distillery and restaurant. The distillery’s new home, complete with a tasting room, tour operation, restaurant, private-events space and rooftop patio, replaced the formerly vacant Wisconsin Leather Building, which was built in 1874 and remains one of the oldest structures in downtown Milwaukee. In addition, the 11,700-square-foot, three-story Crafthouse & Kitchen houses a 100-gallon pot still that will produce all spirits served and sold on site.
Central Standard: Your Local Midwest Craft Distillery
Central Standard Craft Distillery, a small batch, craft distillery in Milwaukee and the fastest growing top-10 Wisconsin-based distiller, handcrafts award-winning, bourbon, whiskey, vodka and gin from locally sourced ingredients. Founded in 2014, Central Standard spirits have won 37 medals across multiple categories for their craft distilling.
“For us, it’s not about the awards or accolades,” McQuillan explained. “It’s about making the best-tasting craft spirits with the finest ingredients that bring to life the outdoor lifestyle of the Midwest.”
Central Standard’s portfolio of premium spirits* includes Red Cabin Bourbon, Door County Cherry Vodka and North Wisconsin Brandy. Door County Cherry Vodka is a blend of Central Standard’s award-winning 100% handcrafted vodka infused with Door County cherries, which are mellowed with a touch of local-harvested, fresh honey. North Brandy, which is handmade in small batches and aged for a minimum of two years, is finished in Central Standard bourbon barrels.
Red Cabin Bourbon is aged to perfection and then finished in California Cabernet wine barrels. Thanks to the red-wine-barrel-finishing, Red Cabin Bourbon – which won a Gold Medal at the Los Angeles International Wine and Spirits competition in 2019, delivers a complex-yet-approachable taste.
About Bill Schroeder
Nicknamed “Rock” during his playing days, Bill Schroeder was selected by Milwaukee’s favorite pro baseball team in the 1979 amateur draft. He remains the team rookie to reach 15 home runs the fastest. He hit 15 dingers in the span of just 71 games in 1979. In his 1987 season, he caught the first and only no-hitter by a single pitcher in brew crew history. Schroeder now does color commentary for the team’s television broadcasts, as well as manages the team’s baseball fantasy camp in Phoenix, Ariz.
About the War Memorial Center
The Milwaukee County War Memorial Center is an experiential space unlike any other where heroes are honored, history is taught, warriors are healed, events are celebrated, and memories are made. The organization’s mission is to honor the dead – serve the living through the principles of art and peace. The War Memorial Center fulfills that mission through memorials and exhibits located throughout its campus, as well as community-wide events, educational programs, and services for veterans and their families. The War Memorial Center was dedicated on Veterans Day in 1957 and was designated a Milwaukee Landmark in 1974 in honor of its architectural and cultural significance to the community.
