Big Clean MKE Returns for Citywide Beautification

By - Apr 21st, 2026 12:35 pm

Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II encourages residents throughout Milwaukee to join the annual Big Clean MKE initiative set to kick off on Wednesday, April 22. The Big Clean MKE is a citywide beautification effort in memory of Special Enforcement Inspector Greg “Ziggy” Zyszkiewicz who tragically lost his life during an attempted carjacking while working for the city of Milwaukee in 2017. The Big Clean MKE is a great way for neighborhood groups, churches, and workplaces to come together around the shared goal of beautifying Milwaukee and giving back to the community.

A Big Clean MKE press conference and rally will take place on Wednesday, April 22, at noon at Pete’s Fruit Market, 2323 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. The event will include a DJ, food, and cleanup in the area.

“The Big Clean MKE was started with one goal in mind – to make Milwaukee the cleanest city in the country. It is that time of year again when I ask residents from all parts of the city to join a cleanup in their area to help us achieve our goal. When our shared spaces are clean, they benefit everyone and enhance the quality of life in our city. The best way to ensure they are clean is by coming together to get the job done,” Alderman Stamper said.

More than 60 community organizations will host cleanups this year, with neighborhood cleanups taking place in the coming weeks and throughout the summer.

Those interested in volunteering can visit Milwaukee.gov/bigcleanmke for a full list of participating organizations, or text “clean ups” to (414) 250-8164 to request supplies, nearby locations, and shirts/signs. All cleanup tools and supplies will be provided to volunteers. All volunteers will also receive a Big Clean MKE t-shirt. Event partners include Westcare Wisconsin, Inc., and Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful. The Big Clean MKE is a year-round effort, with cleanups taking place throughout 2026. Any neighborhoods or community groups interested in joining the movement can do so by visiting the Big Clean MKE website.
