African American Roundtable Releases Statement on Proposed ICE Facility in Milwaukee
“The African American Roundtable (AART) was made aware yesterday of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to move into a building on the city’s far Northwest Side. AART strongly opposes any ICE facility or related facility of any kind including the youth detention center slated for the Northwest Side, not just in Aldermanic District 9 where our office is located, but anywhere. This agency has been responsible for targeting, detaining, and separating hundreds of thousands of families.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) recently confirmed that ICE is actively considering proposals to expand its immigration detention capacity in at least eight other states, including Michigan, California, Kansas, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington state. This is just one issue communities across the country are reckoning with as we all prepare for the new administration’s plans to double down on oppressive, racist, violent, and white supremacist fear tactics to tear our communities apart.
Our comrade, Iuscely Flores reminds us, ‘Now more than ever we have to join together. People tend to forget our struggles are intertwined, because any system of power that oppresses one community is the same system of power oppressing us all.”
We stand with communities across the city, state, and nation opposing this facility and anything related to separating loved ones from their families and communities. AART, alongside residents and other community leaders, will continue to organize and push back against any and all oppressive systems that work to dismantle our communities. We will continue to build power and support communities’ desire to live free from harmful systems!”
