Access to Fresh Food Is Essential for Strong Communities
(Milwaukee, WI) In response to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story that notes insufficient data linking grocery store closures to retail theft, State Representative Arney today underscored the importance of ensuring neighborhoods have access to nearby grocery stores and pharmacies, calling it fundamental to quality of life.
“Access to fresh, healthy food close to home is a basic necessity,” said Rep. Arney. “When grocery stores and pharmacies leave a neighborhood, it creates real challenges for families trying to meet everyday needs.”
Rep. Arney pointed to the ongoing work of Metcalfe Park Community Bridges and their Food Justice Collective as well as Near West Side Partners as critical efforts to strengthen neighborhoods and improve food access.
“We need more grocery stores and pharmacies in our communities,” Arney said. “That’s how we support healthier families and a stronger Milwaukee.”
