Common Ground and resident leaders from Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM) properties, who are engaged in an on-going multi-year campaign to reform HACM, achieved a significant victory today when the Common Council’s Steering and Rules Committee unanimously approved three nominees for the HACM Board of Commissioners: Westlawn Resident Organization President Jackie Burrell, Human Resourses professional Charlotte Hayslett, and Alderwoman Sharlen Moore. Nominees will be voted on by the full Common Council. HACM residents and Common Ground leaders praised the leadership of Council President José Pérez, who has worked tirelessly to get new, resident-centered leaders onto the HACM Board.

“Getting a full Board with new, reform-minded, active leadership is step one. Getting new leadership in top positions at the Housing Authority is the next step,” stated Jennifer O’Hear, Common Ground’s Lead Organizer. “We call on Mayor Johnson to capitalize on this positive momentum and work with the Board to replace HACM’s current leadership.”
