MU Adds Transfer Kayl Petersen

By - Apr 20th, 2026 09:42 am

MILWAUKEEMarquette University women’s basketball head coach Cara Consuegra announced Monday the signing of Kayl Petersen, a 6-foot-1 forward transfer from Virginia Tech, ahead of the 2026–27 season.

“We’re excited to bring Kayl back to Wisconsin and into our program,” Consuegra said. “Kayl brings versatility, toughness and leadership. She can score in multiple ways on the block, facing up, and from the perimeter, while also impacting the game as a screener and playmaker who creates opportunities for teammates. Kayl’s ability to track the ball and rebound on both ends of the floor stands out and will be a key factor in helping us ignite our transition game. She brings consistent energy and a competitive motor every time she steps on the court, and her leadership, work ethic, and team-first approach align perfectly with the culture and standards we value at Marquette.”

A native of Waupun, Petersen returns to her home state after spending the past two seasons with the Hokies. She appeared in 64 games, earning three starts, and averaged 3.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 13.2 minutes per game. Petersen recorded six double-figure scoring performances during her time in Blacksburg, including a career-high 17-point, 11-rebound double-double in the 2025-26 season opener against Towson.

Petersen capped her prep career in 2024 as one of the most accomplished players in Wisconsin. A three-time WBCA Division 3 first-team all-state selection, she helped lead Waupun to a sectional final and a 24-4 overall record during her senior season. The forward averaged 17.7 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.3 blocks per game and was a finalist for Wisconsin Ms. Basketball.

Petersen finished her high school career with 1,903 points, 1,116 rebounds, 324 assists and 240 blocks, helping Waupun to a 90-19 record, two state tournament appearances and the 2022 WIAA Division 3 state championship.

Petersen will have two years of eligibility remaining.
