Representative Shelia Stubbs Celebrates Signing of Assembly Bill 604 – Care for Eligible Individuals Leaving Incarceration
Madison, WI – Today, Governor Tony Evers signed Assembly Bill 604—relating to: coverage under the Medical Assistance program for incarcerated individuals. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:
“Today, Governor Tony Evers signed Assembly Bill 604—relating to: coverage under the Medical Assistance program for incarcerated individuals, into law.
I was proud to introduce this legislation, which will permit prisons and jails throughout our state to receive Medicaid reimbursement for pre-release services such as case management, medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders, and a 30-day supply of medication for individuals who are nearing release and already qualify for Medicaid services.
This act will improve access to treatment and case management for individuals that will soon be released from our jails and prisons, while simultaneously easing some of the financial burden that our state and local governments incur for providing these services by shifting some of the cost to our federal government.
By increasing access to case management services and medical treatment for substance use disorders, as well as covering a 30-day supply of prescription medications upon release, this bill gives Persons in Our Care a greater chance of maintaining sobriety, preventing overdose, and remaining healthy after they rejoin the community.
As the Ranking Democratic Member on the Assembly Committee on Corrections, I remain committed to introducing and supporting legislation that promotes a safe, stable transition for previously incarcerated individuals as their reenter our communities.”
