MADISON, WI – This past Friday, July 24, 2026, Representative Shelia Stubbs joined Attorney Ben Crump and the family of Corey Ruiz, a member of the Madison community who was shot and killed by a member of the Madison Police Department on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, for a press conference at the Wisconsin State Capitol. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“This past Friday, I joined Attorney Ben Crump and the family of Corey Ruiz, who was tragically shot and killed by a Madison police officer this past Wednesday, for a press conference at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

I spoke on my experience as a legislator and community leader who for years has worked on policy to build a more equitable, community-oriented justice system in both Dane County and across our state.

I served on the Dane County Board of Supervisors when Tony Robinson was killed by a Madison police officer in 2015. I stood with my community and marched alongside them, advocating for the creation of criminal justice workgroups that brought community voices and elected officials together to develop workable solutions for Dane County’s pressing racial disparities in our criminal justice system.

In 2021, following the death of Mr. George Floyd and the police shooting of Mr. Jacob Blake in Kenosha, I was selected to Co-Chair the Speaker’s Task Force on Racial Disparities. We brought together protestors, pastors, law enforcement, and community advocates to create statewide policy that sought to enhance accountability and transparency, as well as improve relationships between law enforcement and communities of color. We especially focused on excessive use of force, creating the first uniform statewide definition of use of force for the State of Wisconsin. Of the 18 bills that we introduced, we were able to enact 9 into law.

Mr. Ruiz’s loved ones, including his mother, sisters, brother, daughter, and his daughter’s mother, spoke powerfully of their love for him and how much he meant to their entire family. Their comments reflected a profound grief that can be felt across our entire community. My heart, my prayers, and my deepest condolences remain with them and with the rest of Mr. Ruiz’s family and friends as they begin the difficult, painful process of navigating life without their son, brother, and father.

Attorney Crump emphasized the need for an impartial, transparent, and prompt investigation into the events that transpired on July 22nd, 2026, which led to a young man needlessly losing his life. He expressed very clearly his determination to pursue full justice for Corey Ruiz and his family.”
