Communication File Seeks Discussion of City Response in Face of Possible Federal Surge
How will the City of Milwaukee respond if agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal entities conduct a surge operation similar to the one in Minneapolis?
That question is at the heart of a Common Council communication file that is being brought forward by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs to help identify answers – should such a federal action take place in Milwaukee.
Common Council file #251687, authored by Alderwoman Coggs and co-sponsored by Alderwoman Andrea Pratt, Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, and Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr. – ‘Communication file discussing possible strategies and responses that the City of Milwaukee can take if concentrated I.C.E. or other federal agency militaristic actions are concentrated in Milwaukee’ – will be heard soon by the Public Safety and Health Committee.
Alderwoman Coggs, chair of the Public Works Committee, said she believes it is “absolutely critical at this time” for the Council and other city agencies to get together to proactively discuss the issues in the face of a potential federal response. “Our residents are looking for information and answers to these questions (of how the city will respond) pertaining to a possible federal surge, and I believe we must not delay and instead delve into and discuss the issues now,” Alderwoman Coggs said.
Representatives from the Milwaukee Police Department, the Office of the City Attorney, the Mayor’s Office, MPS and other agencies will be requested to respond as part of the communication file, the Alderwoman said.
