Madison, WI – On December 16, 2024, a mass shooting took place at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, resulting in the death of 2 beloved members of the Abundant Life Christian School community and the injury of 6 others, some of whom still require ongoing care. Today marks the one-year anniversary of the tragedy. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Abundant Life Christian School tragedy, where 2 beloved members of our community lost their lives and 6 more were injured in a mass shooting. Since December 16, 2024, there are families in our community who will never be the same. There are tables that will have empty seats this holiday season.

As the State Representative of Abundant Life Christian School, my heart and prayers remain with the students, staff, families, and community of the school in their time of ongoing grief and healing. I will continue to support them through my position as an elected official and community leader, including through the introduction of legislation.

On June 6, 2025, I introduced Assembly Resolution 8, a resolution commemorating the victims of the Abundant Life Christian School tragedy, supporting the students, staff, families, and community of Abundant Life Christian School, and condemning violence. I hope that this resolution will make it to our Assembly floor, so that the State Legislature can take a moment to acknowledge the victims of this terrible tragedy and stand with their families in support of a Wisconsin where no one has to fear violence.

On Friday December 12, 2025, I introduced a package of 4 bills developed directly from recommendations I received from the community through a listening session that I held on January 27, 2025 following the shooting. These bills would create a standardized lockdown announcement for all Wisconsin schools, require that school safety plans include procedures for informing and debriefing students and families about school safety incidents, create and fund a grant program for parent and guardian volunteer programs, and create and fund a grant program for school counselors to continue their education in mental and behavioral health.

As legislators, we must prioritize our constituents and their needs when pursuing public policy. I will continue to listen to and be the voice for the 78th Assembly District and work for greater safety and supports for every school, every district, and every community in our state.”
