The Office of the Secretary of State Charges into the 20th Century
The SoS office's counter service is now accepting credit cards and other electronic payments
Madison, WI – Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski is excited to announce that office began accepting credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay for in-person customers on January 3rd, 2025.
“Customers that walk into our office in the basement of the Wisconsin State Capitol Building for counter service often had to turn around and walk back outside to go to an ATM, get a money order or retrieve a check book in order to pay for services,” Godlewski said. “If you’ve ever had to park and walk in downtown Madison, in winter, in a snowstorm, you know that this is a game changer.”
Background: The Office of the Secretary of state is located at B41 West in the State Capitol Building in Madison, WI. In 2024 the office processed over 15,000 Apostilles and Authentications accepting only cash, check, or money order. Apostilles are certificates applied to vital records, school transcripts, other public documents issued by the state of Wisconsin, or documents notarized by a Wisconsin Notary Public then transmitted internationally.
