Supervisor Michael Mayo, Sr. Slams Gov. Scott Walker’s Budget Proposal

Mayo Says Budget Would Hurt Senior Citizens, Persons with Disabilities

By - Mar 12th, 2015 02:19 pm

Milwaukee County Supervisor Michael Mayo, Sr. said today that the proposed state budget submitted by Gov. Scott Walker would hurt seniors and persons with disabilities, saying the budget “does not have a heart when it comes to those most in need.

“Gov. Walker is proposing to eliminate the safety net for seniors and persons with disabilities,” Mayo said. “His budget shows utter disregard for the very people who need help the most. This budget tears the safety net in such a way as to allow people to fall through without any help whatsoever.”

Mayo pointed out several items in Walker’s proposed budget that would hurt seniors and persons with disabilities. Among proposed changes, the Walker budget would:

  • Eliminate the Aging and Disability Resource Centers and eliminate long-term care districts as eligible ADRC operators. Mayo said ADRC’s are “one-stop shops” where seniors, people with disabilities and caregivers are all able to access information and assistance regardless of income level.
  • Eliminate the IRIS (Include, Respect, I Self-Direct) program as an alternative to the Family Care for those who wish to fully self-direct their long-term services and support.
  • Dismantle Wisconsin’s Long-Term Care (LTC) System that provides critical support to people with disabilities and older adults, enabling them to stay in their own homes and avoid costly institutional care.
  • Change Senior Care to require adults age 65 and older needing prescription drug coverage to apply for, and if qualified, enroll in a Medicare part D plan instead of simply enrolling in Senior Care. This would increase costs to enrollees by millions of dollars and destroy a program that has been so popular among enrollees.“I would like to sound the alarm to seniors and persons with disabilities. Gov. Walker is insensitive to the people who are most in need,” Mayo said.

I will agree with Michael mayo senior because this is very disappointing to a lot of individuals with disabilities because these people really need these services and lot of them are very upset that they would lose there jobs and there homes/ apartments and there freedom to have a chance to speak up and get there voices heard Scott walker needs to hear what all of have to say this and people would be very bored sitting at where they live at doing nothing people want to work and be out in the community and be independent and doing things for them selves and in order to do this they need the iris program and family Care so I am asking to keep funding these programs and
