Sunstone Studios to present Dutchman by Amiri Baraka

Milwaukee, WI (November 2, 2022) – Sunstone Studios is proud to announce the third production of their 2022/2023 season, Dutchman by Amiri Baraka, directed by Dimonte Henning at the intimate Sunstone Studios space at 127 E Wells St. in Milwaukee. Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune called the play “one of the great plays of the 20th century.” In Dutchman, Clay, a young Black man rides the subway when he smiles at Lula through the glass. She boards the subway and what begins as an awkward encounter becomes flirtatious, then uncomfortable, then dangerous and the characters reckon with race and its impact on Clay’s role in society.

Baraka (formerly known as LeRoi Jones) wrote Dutchman in a single night, and first presented at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York in 1964. It won the Obie award for best Off-Broadway play and was adapted into a film in 1967. Director Dimonte Henning says “I’m grateful to direct DUTCHMAN at Sunstone Studios. Amiri Baraka is a lot like me; in the sense that he uses his art as a way to protest for social change and justice. Keeping Amiri Baraka’s legacy alive through this impactful story and the poetic nature of his writing will no doubt leave audiences with a lot more to reflect on about American society, Black lives, and how the disease of White Supremacy must end.”

Under the leadership of director Dimonte Henning, Dutchman features onstage performances by Denzel Taylor and Hannah Ripp-Dieter. The production is designed by Colin Gawronski with stage management by Rebecca Farr.

• Tickets are $33.00 for all performances.
• The November 14th performance features “Pay What You Will” pricing.
• Season “flex passes” (four admissions) are also available for $99.
