In Preparation for Independence Day Festivities, Port Milwaukee Issues Safety and Public Accessibility Update
MILWAUKEE – Today, Port Milwaukee is announcing specific safety restrictions in advance of the Independence Day fireworks scheduled for the evening of Sunday, July 3, throughout the downtown lakefront area.
Members of the public are advised on the following:
- The Port’s South Harbor Tract (commonly referred to as Jones Island) will be closed to the public from Sunday, July 3, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. No public access locations on Jones Island, including near the Hoan Bridge and at Kaszube’s Park, will be available for watching the fireworks.
- Cruise vessel activity is expected throughout the day on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at Pier Wisconsin Cruise Dock (430 N. Harbor Drive). As such, public access on Pier Wisconsin will be prohibited from 2:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., under federal requirements from the U.S. Coast Guard. Residents are encouraged to utilize alternate firework viewing locations downtown. Limited publicly-accessible green space will be available for watching the fireworks near Pier Wisconsin.
- Due to vessel activity at Pier Wisconsin, members of the public are encouraged to avoid E. Michigan Street east of South Lincoln Memorial Drive on Sunday, July 3, 2022, and to utilize alternate public fireworks viewing locations along the lakefront. Street parking on E. Michigan Street near Pier Wisconsin is prohibited on Sunday, July 3, 2022, and violators will be towed.
- Private events are expected to be held near Pier Wisconsin at both Discovery World museum and Harbor House restaurant during the evening of Sunday, July 3, 2022. Lakefront public access thoroughfares connecting Discovery World, Pier Wisconsin, and Harbor House will remain open and available throughout the day, including near the Rotary Amphitheater at Discovery World.
- Residents should consider other publicly-accessible locations to watch the fireworks on July 3, 2022, including E. Erie Street, Urban Park, the Russel Avenue Fishing Pier, South Shore Park, Veteran’s Park, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and more.
- A slow-no wake zone notice on the water has been previously issued by the City of Milwaukee Harbormaster from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. for Sunday, July 3, 2022. Vessel speed limits are restricted to five miles per hour, slow no wake, in Milwaukee Harbor during this time. Law enforcement will be present on the water.
