Council members call for calm, reason following shooting in Harambee

Common Council members Milele A. Coggs and Ashanti Hamilton called for calm following the shooting death of a 39-year-old man in the Harambee neighborhood Saturday night, urged the parties responsible to turn themselves in to authorities and appealed to neighbors to report any information that might aid the police investigation.
Alderman Hamilton, who grew up with the victim, appealed to his neighbors to assist police in their investigation and refrain from acts of retaliation.
“Many people love Obby and want to see justice served,” Alderman Hamilton said. “But additional bloodshed won’t right these wrongs. It will only perpetuate this cycle of violence and cost our community more lives. These perpetrators will face the consequences of their actions, but justice should be carried out through our court system—not angry violence on the street that hurts innocent people.”
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s friends and family,” Alderwoman Coggs said. “I grew up just three blocks from the scene of this unfortunate crime, and I hope the neighborhood comes together to hold the perpetrators accountable. A city free from gun violence starts with citizens who are brave enough to do the right thing and turn them in.”
“To the shooters, Alderwoman Coggs and I have this to say,” Alderman Hamilton added. “Turn yourselves in. It is the best option you have left as a result of your actions.”
Alds. Coggs and Hamilton will hold a 4:00 p.m. media availability TODAY at E. Auer Avenue and N. First Street, the scene of the shooting.
